Multicellular Neurobiocomputing: Understanding and Advancing towards Biological Supremacy

Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas(A)

Research Support

Shared Platform Centers

Four "Shared Platform Centers" will be operated and will be accessible to all members of planned research and publicly offered research. They are aimed to accelerate individual projects and collaboration between them.

Common platform base

Microfabrication Center (RIEC, Tohoku University)

Support for custom-made machining of experimental equipments used by members of the research consortium, utilizing the facilities at the Laboratory for Nanoelectronics and Spintronics and the Fundamental Technology Center.

  • Example: PDMS microfluidic devices, PEEK microstamps, Teflon chambers, microscope stage plates, etc.
  • How to use: Contact by e-mail ⇒ Online meeting with staff members ⇒ Fabrication ⇒ Delivery *Material and fabrication costs will be covered by the A02-Yamamoto group for the time being.
  • Members in charge: Hideaki Yamamoto and Shigeo Sato (Group A02-1)

Biomaterials/Open Database Center (Research Organization for Nano & Life Innovation, Waseda University)

Support for wet experiments, measurements, and databases in the research consortium by using the facilities at the Research Organization for Nano & Life Innovation, as well as shared tools installed by the current consortium.

  • Equipment: P1-class biotechnology laboratory, confocal laser scanning microscope, etc.
  • How to use: Contact by e-mail
  • Members in charge: Takashi Tanii and Yuya Morimoto (Group A02-2)

Model Animal Experiment Center (Graduate School of Brain Science, Doshisha University)

Support for research in which consortium members validate mathematical models in biological experiments and improve their models based on experimental data through the use of the in vivo imaging facilities and data owned by Masamizu Laboratory.

  • Equipment: Two-photon microscope, macro-zoom spinning-disc scanning confocal microscope
  • Tutorials: September 2024 (for Planned Research members), September 2025 (for Publicly Offered Research members) *To be held about once a year.
  • How to use: Contact by e-mail
  • Members in charge: Hironobu Ozaki and Yoshihito Masamizu (Group A03-1)

System Implementation Center (Department of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Chubu University)

Support for the robotic application of basic technologies in order to link mathematical models, wetware, and hardware to social implementation. In addition to supporting on-site use of the equipment installed at Chubu University, a high-speed Internet environment and security system that enables real-time transmission of video, audio, and sensor data will be provided to enable 24-hour user access from remote locations.

  • Equipment: Autonomous mobile robots, drones (quadcopters), etc.
  • How to use: Contact by e-mail.
  • Members in charge: Yutaka Hirata (Team A04-2)

Support for Young Researchers

Junior Chapter

  • Aiming to develop talent who will lead the next generation in related fields, the Juninor Chapter will promote interactions among graduate students and postdoctoral researchers affiliated with the groups of Planned Research and the Publically Offered Research.
  • Organizer: Hideyuki Kato (A01-1)
  • Mentors: Haruyuki Kamiya (A03-1) and Teppei Matsui (A01-2)

Research internships

  • For Publicly Offered Research: Young PIs of the Publicly Offered Research visit the laboratories of Planned Research members and overseas advisors to conduct collaborative research
  • For Planned Research: Graduate students and young researchers visit the laboratories of other Planned Research members for 1–3 months to conduct collaborative research.
  • Examples: A PhD student working on neuronal cultures stays in the computational neuroscience lab and learns how to efficiently code a mathematical model to explain his/her experiment. A PhD student working on computational neuroscience engage in animal experiments to validate his/her models.
  • How to coordinate: Contact the member you wish to visit by email. Or contact the secretariat Please enable javascript.

Travel support

  • The Administrative Group will support travel and accommodation expenses for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers working with the members of the consortium for his/her participation in Summer Retreat and annual International Symposiums.
  • For young PIs of the Publicly Offered Research, travel and accommodation expenses for research internship will be supported by the Administrative Group. (Subjected to selection, in the case of receiving too many applications)
  • Procedures: Contact the secretariat with the information of the lab to visit ⇒ Send the requested information ⇒ The travel and accommodation expenses will be transferred to the researcher from the Administrative Group (Tohoku University).
